The drug companies agree that antidepressants can cause a bizarre form of behavior called mania or hypomania, but usually deny they can sometimes trigger intense desires to committ suicide.

   In a new book, Prozac Backlash, Harvard Psychiatrist Joe Glenmullen analyses the suicide issue and raises several disturbing points:

• He saw cases in his own practice.
• In several published cases suicidal feelings disappeared when the drug was stopped, and reappeared once treatment resumed.
• The landmark legal cases are deeply flawed and not a true test of the issue.
